A new analysis of more than 100 operating storage sites worldwide, covering over 18 gigawatt-hours of capacity, reveals a young industry marked by both progress and persistent growing pains. Some systems deliver exceptional round-trip efficiency (RTE) and reliability. Others fall short of their contracted capacity, struggle with hidden inefficiencies, or face months-long commissioning delays. The findings underscore a vital truth: batteries are complex, dynamic assets, and ensuring they perform as promised requires more than hardware and a basic spreadsheet. It requires foresight — and increasingly, that foresight is coming from predictive analytics.
Reliability With Cracks Beneath The Surface
On paper, most BESS fleets are reliable. In practice, almost one in five components analyzed in the study exhibited operational issues that directly impaired performance. Some of these issues were visible — a rack tripping offline, or a safety alert halting operations. Others were subtler: imbalances between modules that quietly erode usable capacity and hasten degradation if they continue to fly under the radar.
Left unaddressed, small issues snowball into major costs. What distinguishes successful operators from struggling ones is how early they spot the warning signs. Predictive analytics, which applies physics-based models and fleet-wide data to forecast problems before they escalate, has proven especially effective in this regard. Instead of reacting to a tripped rack after revenue is lost, operators can identify patterns suggesting trouble weeks in advance and take preemptive action.
The Economics of Round-Trip Efficiency
Efficiency may sound like a minor detail, but in storage it defines the financial success—or failure—of a project. Round-trip efficiency (RTE),the ratio of energy discharged to energy charged, determines how much value a system ultimately delivers. Most projects fall between 85% and 88% RTE, but the report shows that those consistently achieving 88% or higher stand apart as best-in-class.
While it is just a couple of percentage points, the difference is far from trivial. At grid scale, even a dip in RTE of just one percent can erase millions in lifetime revenue. Most modern systems are oversized — designed with 15–25% more capacity than contractually required — to hedge against degradation and underperformance. But oversizing too little leaves projects vulnerable to early shortfalls, while oversizing too much strands valuable capital.
This margin also shapes results at Site Acceptance Testing, the first checkpoint where systems must prove they can deliver their nameplate capacity. Fewer than 85% of projects meet this standard, with oversizing often making the difference between passing and falling short. Some projects also “polish” results by temporarily relaxing battery management limits or pausing tests to perform balancing, practices that can secure a pass without ensuring sustainable performance. The closer results sit to nameplate capacity, the more closely specification compliance must be examined.
Commissioning and the Cost of Delay
If design defines the system, commissioning sets the pace for when it begins to earn. Delays are the rule rather than the exception: half of projects slip by one to two months, while others face setbacks of six to nine months. Each delay defers revenue, inflates financing costs, and can even jeopardize battery health before commercial operation starts.
The reasons are varied. Permitting reviews, supply chain disruptions, workforce shortages, and protracted negotiations over warranties or test protocols all play a role. Predictive battery analytics helps keep these risks in check, monitoring milestones in real time and flagging issues before they cascade. In a capital-intensive sector, that foresight often separates manageable setbacks from damaging overruns.

Traditional methods deployed by the battery management system (BMS) frequently misjudge SOC by ±15%, with some outliers above 40%. These errors directly impact dispatch decisions: overestimating SOC risks overselling power and incurring non-compliance penalties, while underestimating leaves revenue on the table.
Many operators respond by building wide safety margins into their strategies — a prudent move, but one that sacrifices usable capacity. Predictive analytics offers a solution, combining physics-based modeling with fleet-level datasets to cut SOC errors to as little as ±2%. With that precision, operators can dispatch more aggressively, trade more confidently, and unlock capacity that would otherwise sit idle.
The Data Behind the Decisions
All of this depends on one thing: data. The report notes that while more than 80% of systems now deliver strong availability, about 20% still fall short in resolution or consistency. Data logged every few minutes may be adequate for market operations, but it cannot capture the transient events that determine true battery health.
The tradeoffs in granularity shape everything from efficiency metrics to fault detection. High-frequency sampling enables precise modeling, while coarser intervals risk missing short-lived dynamics or distorting performance. Predictive analytics helps bridge this gap: smart aggregation strategies, such as logging averages instead of raw snapshots, can boost accuracy without overwhelming operators with unnecessary volume. Ultimately, the stronger the data, the stronger the insights — and the faster the industry can move from reactive troubleshooting to proactive management.
