A major survey of over 100 commercially operating battery energy storage system installations has shown that inaccuracy in their state-of-charge estimation can commonly reach up to 15%.

That is a major challenge for operators who could be missing out on more than $1 million dollars per GWh of installed capacity due to variations in the values operators rely on when deciding how much energy to trade and dispatch.

The problem arises when the state-of-charge (SOC) number does not reflect the energy the system can actually deliver. State of energy offers a better metric of MWh availability for traders.

Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are now the default chemistry for grid-scale BESS. This is because of their proven cost-effectiveness, durability, reduced safety concerns, sustainability and supply chain advantages. But obtaining an accurate estimate of the state-of-charge of LFP batteries remains a challenge.

About ACCURE Battery Intelligence

ACCURE Battery Intelligence pairs an award-winning battery analytics platform with hands-on performance engineering for grid-scale battery storage. The platform combines artificial intelligence with physics-based battery models to give owners and operators an independent, cell-level view of their assets, and ACCURE's performance engineers work alongside clients to act on it: capturing the revenue their assets were built to deliver, lowering operating costs and mitigating risk. Founded by battery researchers from RWTH Aachen University, ACCURE is the assurance and outperformance layer for grid-scale BESS, supporting more than 24 GWh of capacity worldwide. We work with battery owners and operators, and the insurers and financial institutions that back them, across Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and North America.
